If you want more functionality than an iPod Shuffle, but without the weight of an iPod Classic or Touch, the iPod Nano might be your match. But which Nano is right for you?  There are now six generations--all of which have significant differences.

If you're just looking for an iPod Shuffle with a screen, then a first generation iPod Nano can be had for under fifty bucks.  But if you want more functionality--say a video camera or a built-in speaker and mic--the fifth generation iPod Nano might be more your style. And now that the sixth generation has hit the streets, there are more choices than ever.

Sixth Generation Nano

Released: 2010

Reason to Buy: Touch screen display, Cool factor

The sixth generation Nano looks like the second generation shuffle with the addition of a multi-touch a first for the nano

The screen is also smaller and square, with a resolution of 240 by 240 pixels, and the entire thing weighs all of .74 ounces. The sixth generation Nano comes in an 8GB version and a 16GB version.

Fifth Generation Nano

Released: 2009

Reason to Buy: Video Camera, Nike + iPod Sports kit, FM Radio

The fifth generation Nano looks like the fourth generation Nano--except with a glossier finish--and comes in red, green, pink, orange, blue, yellow, purple, black, and silver. The big change in the fifth generation Nano is that it includes a built-in video camera with special effects. This Nano has a number of other new, smaller features, including FM radio with tagging and "live pause," Nike + iPod (built-in pedometer), and a microphone/speaker.

The screen is also slightly bigger, with a resolution of 240 by 376 pixels, and the entire thing is slightly lighter at 1.26 ounces. The fifth generation Nano comes in an 8GB version and a 16GB version.

Fourth Generation Nano

Released: 2008

Reason to Buy: Accelerometer, lots of colors, more space (16GB version)

The fourth generation Nano looks more like the first and second generation Nanos--it's thin and long, instead of short and fat. The fourth generation Nano is 3.57 inches tall, 1.52 inches wide, and 0.24 inches thick, and weighs 1.3 ounces. Like the second generation Nano, the fourth generation Nano has an aluminum shell, and comes in silver, black, purple, light blue, green, yellow, orange, red, and pink.

The fourth generation Nano is the first Nano with a built-in accelerometer, which allows users to tilt the Nano horizontally to watch videos and use the Cover Flow browsing option. It comes in 8GB and 16GB versions, and supports voice recording (with an Apple compatible headphone/mic combo). The fourth generation Nano has a battery life of 24 hours audio playback and 4 hours video playback.

Third Generation Nano

Released: 2007

Reason to Buy: Bigger screen, "stubby design"

The third generation Nano is a big jump from the first and second generations in terms of dimensions and screen. The third generation Nano has a 2-inch 320 by 240 pixel QVGA screen, and supports Cover Flow browsing. Instead of being entirely made of anodized aluminum, like the second generation Nano, the third generation Nano features an aluminum front and a stainless steel back--in fact, it looks a lot like a miniature version of the sixth generation iPod Classic.

The third generation Nano comes in 4GB and 8GB versions--the 4GB version comes in silver, while the 8GB version is available in silver, turquoise, green, black, red, and pink. This Nano also supports video playback--a big change from the previous two versions--and has a purported battery life of 24 hours audio playback and five hours video playback.

Second Generation Nano

Released: 2006

Reason to Buy: Multiple colors

The second generation iPod Nano offers consumers more variety. Released in 2006, the second generation Nano has similar dimensions to the first generation Nano and comes in six different colors (silver, green, pink, blue, black, and red). Not all sizes (2GB, 4GB, and 8GB) are available in all colors--the 2GB version comes in silver only, the 4GB version comes in green, blue, silver, and pink, and the 8GB version comes in black or red.

The screen isn't any bigger, but it's purportedly "brighter" (40 percent brighter) and "more vibrant" than the first generation Nano's screen. The battery life was also extended from 14 hours to 24 hours.

First Generation Nano

Released: 2005

Reason to Buy: You can probably get it for cheap

The first generation iPod Nano was released in late 2005 as an alternative to the iPod Mini. At 1.6 inches wide, 3.5 inches long, and 0.27 inches thick, it's longer and thinner than the more square-shaped recent iPod Nanos. The first generation Nano weighs 1.5 ounces and has a stated battery life of 14 hours. The screen is much smaller than newer Nanos, at 1.5 inches and 176 by 132 pixels.

If you like variety, the first generation Nano may not be for you--it only comes in two colors (black and white), and three sizes (1GB, 2GB, and 4GB).
